Blues 19-Man Varsity Squad Announcement

Last Saturday, the extended varsity squad headed away for their penultimate varsity warm-up match vs Sheffield. With the rain falling heavily and the pitch more bog than grass, the lads ground out a brutal 20-4 victory with everyone pleased in the knowledge that they put their name in the hat for the final 19-man Match Day Varsity Squad. Cutting the exceptionally strong 22-man squad down to 19 has given Blues Captain, James Clark, and the coaching staff many headaches. The 2015/16 season brought great success to OURLFC with the Blues finishing second in Midlands 1A with a strong 5 game unbeaten streak to finish the league. Similarly, the Maroons took apart every team put in front of them from day one, coming out top of their league with two games in hand and strong favourites to do the double towards the end of Hilary. The consistent performances have really highlighted the strength of the squad this year with playing numbers at an all time high. Maroons Match Report vs Warwick 25/11/15

On the 25th of November 2015, 13 Mighty Maroons travelled up the M40 to face an also-undefeated Warwick 1st team side in a highly anticipated top of the table clash. Despite the bare 13 because of a mounting club injury list, the squad was full of rugby league talent and the lads were confident of getting a result. Spirits were boosted before kick-off even further through the unexpected yet welcome arrival of Henry ‘the woodsman’ Woods, giving Oxford a substitute. What a luxury! The day started with a Blues side turning up at Uni Parks to face a strong Birmingham Rugby League team. With centre, Mike Woyton, sporting a lovely new spray on tan and silky smooth legs, the boys began prep for a league match that required nothing less than a W. With a late cancellation by CURLFC on the morning of the Maroons fixture, OURLFC had just the one match scheduled this week. A tough away trip against Coventry University. The match started in the exact opposite fashion to how Blues Captain, James Clark would have wanted. A very slow start by the Oxford lads wasn’t helped by an early injury to prop Bob Bainbridge who left the field on 3 minutes. The first game of the season saw the Blues face Oxford Brookes in University Parks for the first local derby in 3 years. Having never lost to Brookes, the Blues were looking to lay down a marker to the rest of the league for the coming season. The game kicked off at 2pm in front of 100 Brookes supporters, whose enthusiasm quickly died as Captain James Clark scored in the opening minutes.
